Waves Volleyball Club is headed by Michael Wahbi. A well known and highly respected coach in the Toronto volleyball community, he is also a Health and Physical Education teacher in Etobicoke.

For the past 15 years, Michael has coached volleyball at the University, Club and High School level. His varsity tenures include: Head Coach, York Lions Men's Volleyball (2016-2018), Lead Assistant Coach with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (2011-2014), under the leadership of current Blues Head Coach, John Barrett.

Michael has served as a guest coach with National Teams, (B Team and Jr. National Team), served as an Assistant Coach for the Gold medal U19 Team Ontario (2012), Head Coach of the  Bronze medalist Region 5 Summer Games team (2010), as well as Head Coach of the 14U Pakmen OVA silver medalist team (2013).

Michael has completed level 5 of the Advanced Coaching Diploma Program with the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario and is also heavily involved in the community. Michael's primary passion for coaching has been to give back to the sport of volleyball, by teaching young athletes fundamental skills, leadership and resilience within the game.​​

Mimi Demski

Setting Coach

Coach Mimi is a former setter at York University who has completed a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering. While working as a Civil Engineer, she is dedicated to both her professional career and her passion for the sport. She strives to be a role model to the young athletes within the club and help build the volleyball community with Waves while focusing on time management skills, self discipline, mental strength, and other academic tools to enrich athletes with the tactics necessary to be successful both on and off the court.

Aidan Haslett

Coach 18U Boys

Aidan began playing volleyball at the age of 9 and developed a passion for the game. He joined the Toronto Boys Volleyball Club at the age of 12, and his career kicked off from there. Aidan concluded his competitive playing career at the University of Toronto having captained the squad for his final 2 seasons. A recent graduate from the University of Toronto with a degree in Kinesiology, Aidan is interested in High Performance sport and helping athletes to reach their full potential. Aidan has had many great coaches over his career and uses the lessons learned from them to shape his coaching philosophy.

Will Colucci

Assistant Coach 18U Boys

Coach Will began his volleyball career at a club level and then gradually progressed through the regional, provincial, national and varsity in indoor volleyball. His love and passion for the game is what motivated him to become a high performance athlete. Having focused on his own volleyball career for the majority of her teenage and adult life, William understands the athlete’s desire to improve mentally, physically and emotionally both on and off the court. William is a first time coach with a couple years of volleyball instructing experience. Coach William possesses extensive playing experience, technical ability and tactical knowledge.

Oksana Wankiewicz

Assistant Coach 18U Boys

Coach Oksana is a recent graduate from the Masters of Professional Kinesiology program at the University of Toronto and assistant coach for the U17 boy’s team. Although Oksana has never played university or club volleyball, she found her passion for sport through varsity rowing as an undergraduate student. She worked her way to competing across Canada at the Ontario and Canadian University Championships, the Royal Canadian Henley, the Head of the Charles, contended at Rowing Canada’s National Championships, while leading the women’s varsity team as captain in her final undergraduate year.

Oksana approaches coaching with a holistic mindset, to ensure athletes address both the mental and physical components required to become successful in their sport. Oksana’s goal is to educate athletes on movement awareness for performance and injury prevention, while supporting athletes through their development at the club-level, to ensure they reach their fullest potential.

Sean Brijmohan

Assistant Coach 18U Boys

Coach Sean began his passion for volleyball in high school at Monsignor Percy Johnson under the coaching of Director Michael Wahbi. Sean competed at a high level throughout his four years qualifying for a number of championships in the TCDSB. He hoped to continue his love for the sport through coaching and found a position as an assistant coach at Waves VC. Now currently in his second year of coaching, Sean strives to provide these young athletes with a positive learning environment as well as a strong mentor that can lead athletes to a successful and victorious career in the sport of volleyball. ​

Nabil Orellana

Coach 17U Girls

Coach Nabil is in his 4th year of his high-school teaching career. He has coached both junior and senior boys and girls teams and his latest accomplishment was taking the junior girls team to the TDCAA finals.

Nabil is a Bishop Allen Academy alumni where he played volleyball all four years as an outside hitter. He now plays volleyball for fun, and enjoys coaching young athletes in the sport. He focuses on creating a positive, motivating, and educational environment where these athletes can successfully develop at the high performance level.

Amar Balkaran

Amar Balkaran-sq T

Assistant Coach 17U Girls & Assistant Director

Amar attended high-school at Rick Hansen Secondary School where he played five seasons of indoor volleyball with the Storm coached by UofT Assistant Coach Dave MacAllister where he won three Regional Gold Medals and two Regional Silver Medals and appeared at OFSSAA all five years of his high-school career. Amar played three seasons of Club Volleyball with West Side. After playing high school & club Volleyball, Amar began his coaching career in 2008 and has coached for the Rick Hansen Storm Club team for two years and then shifted over to Pakmen Volleyball Club where he coached for five years. In his pursuit of coaching thus far, Amar has accomplished the following:

  • National Title with 15U Boys Pakmen Team in May 2013
  • Provincial Title with 16U Boys Team in April 2014
  • National Silver Medal (Eastern Nationals) with 16U Boys Team in May 2014
  • National 4th Place Finish (Western Nationals) with 16U Boys Team in May 2014
  • Medalled with Boys Pakmen Black Team (U13 to U18) over 25 times
  • Asst. Coach to Team Ontario Region 5 Black Team (U16 Boys) in January 2014 - Finished 4th
  • Asst. Coach to Team Ontario Region 5 Black Team (U14 Boys) in August 2016 - Finished 5th

Ian Heynan

Assistant Coach 17U Girls

Coach Ian played volleyball at the University of Waterloo from 1987 through 1992, winning two CIAU national bronze medals.  Ian was team captain and awarded an OUAA All Star Honourable Mention in his final year.  After leaving university, he played many more years of Club volleyball in BC and Ontario.  Ian moved to coaching and has been sharing his passion for the game  with youth volleyball players since 2012.​

Elisa Rios

Assistant Coach 17U Girls

Coach Elisa has been playing school volleyball for seven years now and club volleyball for two. Elisa is a grade 11 student at Bishop Allen Academy and she is excited to work with and become a role model for the athletes. Elisa joined Waves Volleyball Club in its first year as a player and fell in love with the coaching. During her third year playing club she decided to switch over to the assistant coaching role.  She is willing to take all the information that she has learned both on and off the court and input it into her coaching. This has brought her many experiences and realizations as she has learned more about the sport and is confident in being able to support the players through their athletic and academic aspirations.

Katherine McKenzie

Coach 16U Girls

Coach Kat played school volleyball for 9 years, including 4 years as a starting libero on the Senator O'Connor College School varsity volleyball team. She has played club volleyball for 6 years, joining WAVES Volleyball Club in it's second year. Kat is a certified level 1 OVA referee and is currently attending Ryerson's Ted Rogers School of Management working towards a business degree. Throughout her playing career, Kat has enjoyed mentoring and coaching younger players.  She is excited to continue her tenure with WAVES ,now as coach, and is looking forward to working with and learning from the other coaches and athletes.

Faraz Tahir

Faraz's passion of teaching, and coaching comes from his previous experience as a Technical Trainer and an Instructional Designer within the corporate world. His volleyball coaching experience started with Pakmen Volleyball Club, where he assisted current WAVES coach, Amar Balkaran, for four years. He is fully committed in the idea of High Performance here at WAVES as he will be assisting in building training programs for athletes and coaches to develop their skills on and off season. He is also assisting in club photography and writing articles to spread the love of volleyball. We here at WAVES are very excited to have Faraz join the team to mix technology and coaching to bring the best in our athletes.

As an assistant coach, Faraz has accomplished the following:

  • ​​National Title with 15U Boys Pakmen in may 2013
  • Provincial Title with 16U Boys in April 2014
  • National Silver Medal (Eastern Nationals) with 16U Boys in May 2014
  • National 4th Place Finish (Western National) with 16U Boys in May 2014

Adam Evangelista

Coach 15U Boys

Coach Adam has graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering. He played 1 year of club volleyball with X-Men, coached by Rod Humana. Adam was coached by Michael Wahbi throughout his high school volleyball career at Monsignor Percy Johnson. Adam looks forward to taking all the skills he has learned, from these amazing coaches, to help athletes excel and advance their volleyball performance at the higher levels.

Luke Evangelista

Assistant Coach 15U Boys

Coach Luke played high school volleyball for four years at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School capturing two division titles playing as an outside hitter. Luke took his experience with the game of volleyball and brought it into his career as a teacher, with the Toronto Catholic District School Board. He has coached teams around the board at both the elementary and high school level. Luke is passionate about developing players from a young age to consistently perform at a high level throughout their volleyball careers. He is currently coaching a 15U girls team with Waves and is excited to continue to develop athletes into high performing players.

Coach 12U Boys

Coach Bertie was a national level badminton player and started playing volleyball for his high school team. He played for York University’s volleyball team from 1993 -1997 and won the OUA Championships in 1993. After university, Bertie competed on the Ontario open men’s beach tour. He currently is a P.E. and special education teacher with the TDSB and sharing his volleyball knowledge with his students.

Coaching Experience:

  • Over 20 years coaching elementary school boys, girls and coed teams including middle school teams in TDSB and high school teams at international schools
  • Clinics and camps held by York University Varsity programs
  • Currently coaching his daughter and her partner on the junior beach volleyball tour
